Organic or dictated?

In my opinion business is organic. Fact. That’s just the way it is, always has been and how it’s evolved, organically. There are few quantum leaps rather millions of incremental ones on a daily basis. The business ‘ecosystem’ is naturally diverse and complex but the spread of technology in general and the internet in particular threatens that diversity. Just like the changes in the natural World, it seems as if these changes are possibly irreversible and the results of them far reaching and highly unpredictable.

Because everyone is being driven to global portals like the Mac App Store they are having to ‘fit in’ with whatever requirements they lay down. Whether your product is $99 or $0.99 you have the same sized image, the same number of words to describe it in and the lack of opportunity to justify the $98.01 price difference. Will you be in the charts? Probably not, the $0.99 title will be lucky because there are loads of others of the same price, let alone the free ones! This doesn’t just potentially smother your ‘baby’ at birth. It also sets a new, artificial criteria for product development to make it fit effectively into this totally arbitrary rule set.

What will we end up with? Who knows? But it’ll be whatever is dictated by the big players unless developers have an alternative and a way to work the way they want rather than how they’re told to.
